Blunk Space is a gallery established by the Estate of the pioneering Northern California artist JB Blunk (1926–2002), and serves as a platform for contemporary and historical art and design influenced by Blunk’s practice. The gallery enables an ongoing exploration of creative legacy and influence by bringing contemporary practitioners into his space and their work into conversation with his own, and with that of artists from his circle. Exhibiting artists are given access to the Estate’s extensive archive and permanent collection, and to the Blunk House, Blunk’s iconic handmade home in Inverness, California. The new work emerging from these collaborations across time and disciplines renders Blunk’s legacy vital and engaging.
Blunk Space was founded in 2021 by Blunk’s daughter, curator and design historian Mariah Nielson. Exhibitors include some of the foremost names working in art and design today, including Adam Pogue, Bethan Laura Wood, Commune, Charles De Lisle, David Wiseman, Frances Palmer, Green River Project, Ilse Crawford, Jasper Morrison, Jochen Holz, Leslie Williamson, Martino Gamper, Masaomi Yasunaga, Max Lamb, Minjae Kim and many more. Blunk Space has been featured in a variety of influential publications, including The Financial Times, T Magazine, The World of Interiors, Wallpaper*, Elle Decor, and Architectural Digest.
